For 2003, Toho released the film “Godzilla X MechaGodzilla”. Bandai produced figures of Godzilla 2003, MechaGodzilla 2003 with weapons, and MechaGodzilla 2003 without weapons. The tags are folded and picture the respected kaiju. Information is found on the back of the tag and a catalog is on the inside of the tag displaying the latest 6 inch and 8 inch vinyl toys. The Toho license sticker is gold and pictures the Marvel comics Godzilla with the year 2002. The tag for MechaGodzilla without weapons has a different, more appropriate picture of MechaGodzilla without weapons than the version with weapons. The tag is styled black and white. The Toho license sticker is the same.
Godzilla 2003, Mechagodzilla 2003 w/weapons, & MechaGodzilla 2003 without weapons
Theater Exclusives were released with Godzilla 2003 done in clear translucent vinyl with white highlights for the body and ice blue for the spines to represent Godzilla being frozen by Mechagodzilla. The Theater Exclusive MechaGodzilla 2003 is done in Black vinyl and has a reverse paint job when compared to the regular standad version. Both tags and license stickers are the same as above, but with a Theater Exclusive sticker placed on the front of the tag.
Theater Exclusive Godzilla 2003 & MechaGodzilla 2003
Bandai produced two event exclusive figures. The Ito Yokado Red Translucent Godzilla 2003 and the Link Science black vinyl MechaGodzilla 2003 without weapons. The tag for the Ito Yokado Godzilla is a single card done in blue. The Link Science MechaGodzilla tag is the same as the regular standard, but has a white/black sticker announcing the toy as a Link Science Exclusive. The gold Toho License sticker is the same as the above.
Ito Yokado Godzilla 2003 & Link Science MechaGodzilla 2003
Known Bootlegs of Godzilla 2003 are found of the Theater Exclusive version and various translucent painted versions. Only the vinyl toys mentioned above are actual Bandai releases.
For 2004, Toho released “Godzilla x Mothra x MechaGodzilla: Tokyo SOS”. Bandai made new molds for both Godzilla and MechaGodzilla, as well as for Mothra Adult and Mothra Larva. Here’s a look at each monster featured in the film.
Godzilla 2004: While it appears the arms, legs, back spines, and tail are reused from last years mold, a new body and head were made to update the figure as it appears in GMMG. The body features the “battle scar” as resulted to Godzilla’s battle with MechaGodzilla in GxMG. The head has a closed mouth, which hasn’t been done for any Bandai Godzilla since the 91’ version. The tag is folded and pictures Godzilla with its mouth closed. Inside of the tag has the same picture with information. The Toho license sticker pictures the Marvel comics Godzilla with the year 2003. There is an extra white tag attached with the figure, but I’m unsure of its meaning, since it is in Japanese.
Theater Exclusive Godzilla 2004
Bandai released a Theater Exclusive version with Godzilla painted with yellow highlights found on the chest and light green highlights found between the back of the spines. The highlights represent the results of Mothra unleashing its scales during its battle with Godzilla. The tag is a single card and is done in white and green. The Toho license sticker is the same as above and the extra white tag is also included.
HMV & Ito Yokado Godzilla 2004
HMV and Ito Yokado exclusives were also released. The HMV version is done in translucent green and the Ito Yokado version is done in translucent grey. The tag for the HMV figure is fashioned after the Theater Exclusive tag, but done in black and white. The tag for the Ito Yokado figure pictures Godzilla the same as the standard tag, but is a single card and done in black and white. The Toho license sicker for the HMV exclusive is in gold and has the “Toho” symbol with “Licensed by Toho Co. LTD” printed on the sticker. The Toho license sicker for the Ito Yokado exclusive is the same as the standard figure. Both Exclusives have the extra white tag.
Toys Dream Project Exclusive Godzilla 2004
Bandai, in conjunction with Toys Dream Project, released a Tokyo SOS Box set which included Godzilla 2004, MechaGodzilla 2004, and Mothra Faries Key Chain. The box sports the “50 anniversary” symbol and the Toho license sticker is gold and pictures the same anniversary symbol with the year 2004.
The back spines on SOS exclusive Godzilla appear to be clear vinyl and painted light metallic blue to appear that Godzilla is going to fire its ray. The tag has a different picture of Godzilla in front and back of the single card and appears in black and white. There is no Toho license sticker on the tag, since it is placed on the box and there is no extra white tag.
MechaGodzilla 2004: It appears the tail, lower body/legs, and the head is the same mold used for the Bandai MechaGodzilla 2003. The left arm could be the same too with just the new weapon attachment added. The body and the right arm are new molds to update the figure as it appears in GMMG. The tag is folded and pictures MechaGodzilla 2004 on the front and inside of the tag with information. The Toho license sticker is the same used for Godzilla 2004 and has the extra white tag, but rewritten with MechaGodzilla’s name on the card.
Bandai released a Theater Exclusive version of MechaGodzilla 2004 done in black vinyl with reverse paint job, much like the Theater Exclusive MechaGodzilla 2003. The tag is a single card done in black and white. The Toho license sticker is the same as the standard version and has the extra white card.
Bandai produced a Ito Yokado Exclusive MechaGodzilla 2004 to go with their Exclusive Godzilla 2004. The figure is done in Translucent Black vinyl. The tag is the same as the standard version, but made as a single card and done in black and white. The Toho sticker is the same as the above and includes the extra white tag.
Bandai later released a MechaGodzilla 2004 without weapons and drill hand. It is believe this figure was on hold untill after the movie premiered not to expose that MechaGodzilla’s hand turned into a drill. The tag is folded with a new picture of MechaGodzilla without weapons on the front and inside with information. The Toho sticker is the same as the above and includes the extra white tag.
As part of the Tokyo SOS Box set released by Toys Dream Project, The MechaGodzilla 2004 without weapons was used for the set. MechaGodzilla’s right eye is painted black with a red pupil and black highlights around the eye to represent the damaged inflicted by Godzilla. The tag is a single card with a different picture of MechaGodzilla 2004 without weapons than used for the standard version. The card is done in black and white and no license sticker is placed on the tag and does not include the extra white tag.
MechaGodzilla 2004, Theater Exclusive MechaGodzilla 2004, Ito Yokado Exclusive MechaGodzilla 2004, MechaGodzilla 2004 with drill hand, & Tokyo SOS Box Set Exclusive MechaGodzilla 2004 with drill hand.
Mothra 2004: Many collectors weren’t happy that Mothra was returning in GMMG, but to everyone’s surprise, Mothra fared well in the movie with many saying it was the best Mothra ever. Bandai produced a very attractive Mothra Adult 2004. The body is done in white vinyl and the wings are done in brown vinyl. The tag is folded and pictures Mothra on the front and inside with information. The Toho license is the same as above, but no extra white tag is attached with the figure.
Bandai released a Theater Exclusive version of Mothra 2004 with the wings done in clear vinyl with painted highlights. The tag is a single card done in a raspberry color. The Toho license sticker is the same as above.
Mothra 2004 & Theater Exclusive Mothra 2004
Mothra Larva: Bandai produced two Mothra Larva’s, but only released one version before the movies premiere. It is unknown why Bandai did this. The tag for the first Mothra Larva is folded and picture Mothra Larva on the front and inside of the tag with information. The same Toho license sticker is used and no extra white card is attached to the figure.
The second Mothra Larva is made differently when compared to the first one. The body is curved and the mouth is open. The tag is folded and pictures the second Mothra Larva on the front and inside of the tag with information. The same Toho license sticker is used and no extra white card is attached to the figure.
Bandai produced a Theater Exclusive Mothra Larva of the first version, but not of the second version. The figure is done in translucent brown vinyl with painted highlights. The tag is the same as the first version, but as a single card and done in brown and white. The same Toho license sticker is used and no extra white card is attached to the figure.
Mothra Larva 2004 (first version), Theater Exclusive Mothra Larva 2004 (first version) & Mothra Larva 2004 (second version)
There are known bootlegs of the Bandai Godzilla 2004 and Bandai never produced Mothra Larva’s with red eyes. The vinyl toys mentioned above are the only license toys produced by Bandai
