Kaiyodo Xebec Gamera III Series: part 1
Kaiyodo Xebec Gamera III Series: part 2

Since the release of the Toho film "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah 91", Bandai Japan has always been the main toy company to produce vinyl figures for the newest kaiju film. In recent years, toy companies such as M1 and Marmit have released their versions of kaiju that would appear in new films, yet Bandai Japan's representions have always been the favorite and most anticipated among collectors.

1999 saw Daiei release the third film installment of their Gamera trilogy titled "Gamera III, Gamera vs. Irys". Bandai Japan would produced vinyl figures from the newest Gamera film at that time. In an unprecedented move, Kaiyodo Xebec also produced toys that directly tied in to the new "Gamera III" film. This would be the first time another Japanese toy company, other than Bandai, would produced new toys tied to a new film. Kaiyodo Xebec's Gamera 99, Gyaos 99 and Irys figures would not be made of vinyl, but as solid PVC figures, another first for new figures based on a new film.

Kaiyodo Xebec produced detailed and accurate representations of Gamera 99 and Irys that many collectors felt were better than Bandai Japan's versions. Gamera was paired with a Gyaos that was styled in a flying postion and sold on card and secured in a clear plastic display case. An added accessory included a painted variant right hand that can be interchanged on Gamera. Irys was sold in the same styled display case with the only difference being the coloring of the lettering and the sticker on the display case properly identifing Irys. All four tentacles required to be assembled on Irys. Surprising, quite a bit of english can be found on the packaging which leaves to wonder if Kiayodo Xebec had planned a U.S. release of these figures.

Many collectors today are well aware of the constant paint variants and translucent figures Japanese toy companies have produced thru the years. Kaiyodo Xebec is possibly the first of these Japanese toy companies to produce multiple paint and translucent variations of their Gamera III Series. There are at least nineteen known varitations produced for this series with fifteen of the pieces being Gamera figures.

Unfortunately, information is sketchy on some pieces. Some releases I'm unaware of what they were sold as and some pieces were created as "Giveaway" items never intended for sale. This article will be more of a "Checklist" of what Kaiyodo Xebec has released provided with information I do have. Please e-mail me at vinylmaddness@aol.com with any information on these items not listed.

Exclusive Gold Gamera 99 w/ Gyaos

The first of many unknown releases of the Kaiyodo Xebec Gamera III Series. The Gold version of Gamera 99 and Gyaos is believed to be a "Giveaway" item for a certain event or to a certain company. What indicates this it the lack of the Daiei license sticker not found on the packaging suggesting this item wasn't intended for sale. A reddish/pink right hand is included.
